Asus V8460 Ultra Deluxe
GeForce 4 Ti4600 128Mb DDR

Introduction

At times, it seems that the various versions of the GeForce 4 Ti4600 floating around the market are essentially identical, but that isn't always the case. The Asus V8460 Ultra Deluxe, for example, has managed to set itself apart by offering the most complete package we've seen in a card of this class.

Not only does the V8460 Ultra Deluxe possess all the bells and whistles of its predecessor, the V8460 Ultra (which we reviewed previously), but it also comes with a number of features that are rarely seen as part of other graphics cards. These include S-VHS in and out, RCA in and out video connectors, a flat-panel display port, a DIV /2 VGA adapter, and a pair of 3D stereoscopic glasses.

The V8460 Ultra Deluxe also comes with a fabulous software package, that includes: the Asus SmartDoctor II Overclocking and anti-overheating utility, Asus Digital VCR II for recording sequences of video, and Asus Video Security II which permits users to set-up their own video surveillance system.

And, of course, a number of standard Asus utilities such as DVD2000, and a whole pack of 3D games and demos also come as part of the package.

From a hardware standpoint, the V8460 Ultra Deluxe is -- asides from its additional ports -- identical to the V8460 Ultra: its GPU operates at 300MHz, the RAMDAC at 350MHz, and its 128MB of DDR memory is clocked at 650MHz.

It's also worth recalling that, like the Ti4400 series of cards, the GeForce 4 Ti4600 family comes equipped with two Vertex Shaders and Pixel Shaders, which means faster and better 3D images.

For more detail on the underlying technology behind the GeForce 4, we suggest referring to our review of the Ti4400.

The major physical difference that separates the V8460 Ultra and the new V8460 Ultra Deluxe is the size of the heatsink installed on the latter. It is huge and imposing, and is just large enough to cover not only the GPU, but also the memory chips. Its powerful fan helps channel heat away by passing fresh air over the entire kit and caboodle.

And, we have to say, the V8460 Ultra Deluxe's heatsink is highly efficient, as well as quite attractive.

Please note as well, that today's test system is slightly different from what we used to test previous GeForce 4 cards. First, we'll be using drivers 2942, rather than the older 2311. Our Intel system has also changed: We will be using the Asus P4T533-C motherboard combined with a 533MHz FSB, 2.4GHZ Intel Pentium 4, and PC1066 memory.

The new set-up will enable us to test Ti4600 cards to their very limits, by allowing them to operate under ideal performance conditions.
