Introduction

With the launching of this new processor based on the Barton core, AMD are in fact introducing 3 new processors on the market that are the XP2500, XP2800 and XP3000 where the last one will be the one reviewed in this article.

These new processors are all working with a FSB of 166Mhz (DDR333) like introduced on the XP2700+ for the first time.

However, this is not the only interest of these new processors. As a matter of fact, the most interesting point of these new processors is in the L2 cache which has doubled its size to go from 256k to 512k.

Like you can understand, it has been necessary to enlarge the die size in order to make some room for the larger L2 cache.

The Barton care

The Barton core is using a manufacturing process of 0.13 micron with a L2 cache of 512k and has a total of over 54 millions transistors. Below, we can see the Barton core against the Thoroughbred core.

Below, are the main characteristics of the Thouroughbred and Barton cores.

We can see that while the Thoroughbred core is clocked at a frquency of 2250Mhz, the Barton core is cloked at 2167Mhz.

Thus, except the Larger L2 cahce, the Barton core is exactly the same as the Barton core.

Expected retail prices:

XP 3000+ = $588us
XP 2800+ = $375us
XP 2500+ = $239us
