The OCZ Performance Series PC2100 memory

Thursday, June 14, 2001

Introduction

In our last article, we took a look at 4 different DDR PC2100 CAS 2.5 memory modules. The goal was threefold: to highlight to users the importance of RAM quality, to determine which brand offered the best performance, and to see which responded best to Overclocking.

This time around, we'll be challenging those results as we take a look at a high-performance module that was put together under the highest level of quality-control and performance expectations - all in hopes of marketing the fastest memory under the sun.

To that end, our memory donors this time around will be the good folks over at the (Overclockerz store), who are already well known is the U.S.A. for their wide range of high-quality, thoroughly selected components.

OCZ is, for example, widely reputed for their Overclocked AMD Athlon CPUs, which are often rated for 1400, 1450, and even 1500MHz.

With this kind of experience firmly under the belt, the OCZ team decided to put a little of their savoir-faire into a line of memory products - and it will in fact be an OCZ "Performance Series" module that we'll be reviewing today.
During the course of our test, the OCZ module will also be compared to the 4 competing modules that we've reviewed earlier in this article.

The only characteristics that distinguish the OCZ stick from its 4 rivals are its lower, CAS 2 latency - which compares favorably to the CAS 2.5 latency of the other brands, and it's size - 256MB rather than 128MB.

Let's take a look.

Next: Test setup.
