Introduction It was only shortly after our review of the AOpen CRW3248, which had a write/re-write/read speed of 32x/12x/48x, that AOpen sent us a sample of their new CRW4048, which, as its name indicates operates at 40x/12x/48x. It is our pleasure to be testing this baby today. As expected, AOpen's newest model comes equipped with the same technologies as its predecessors, the CRW2432 and the CRW3248 -- Just Link, and Just Speed.

On the other hand, the CRW4048's data buffer is only 2MB -- considerably smaller than the CRW3248's 8MB buffer. Hopefully, this unexpected reduction in buffer size won't impact too harshly on performance...

Whatever the case, we won't spend much time in this article describing the CRW4048's finer points, such as "Just Link" and "Just Speed". For an overview of those technologies, we suggest you check our review of the CRW3248.
