Benchmark applications

Last Update: Friday, April 05, 2002

Here are some of the most popular benchmark softwares used to gauge computer performance. Some of them are especially designed to test specific areas of a computer system while others are used to perform multiple tests and give an overall quality indice of the performance measured.

Diagnostics Programs

Diagnostics programs are different from benchmark programs in that they are very serious programs used to analyse specific computer problems and cure them, instead of only measuring component performance. The following programs (for the most part) have been written by Craig Hart, a hardware designer, computer technician and programmer. The programs he developed are widely used by computer technicians to analyse hardware problems, acting as help tools to solve these problems.  If you're interested you can visit Craig's WebSite at http://home.hyperlink.net.au/~chart/index.htm . All of these programs are freeware and can be directly downloaded from Craig's site or from the links down below.

PC Diagnostics 95

Started out as an in-house diagnostic for assisting in repairing sick PC's, this program has grown to a general-purpose, user-friendly diagnostic package that can check out most aspects of a PC, including modern features such as the PCI & MCA buses, and handles the very latest systems, all the way to Pentium II. It can perform system burn-ins and can even detect intermittent problems. Has over 200 individual tests. This package doesn't have full documentation yet, but the program is fully functional. Works with an optional POST board, such as those made by Micro 2000, etc.

HDP

HDP is a utility that reads the partition table from a hard disk, examines the data therein, and tells you the CHS parameters used to set the drive up. This information is invaluable in resurrecting CMOS setups, verifying that translations haven't changed when moving drives between controllers and/or BIOS's, etc. HDP also displays the 'current' translation in use and the 'raw' partition data, as well as an indication of whether translation is required or not (i.e. LBA mode on IDE drives) in an easy-to-read single 80x25 screen. If you work with hard disks then you need HDP. It comes with extensive documentation on when and why HDP is required. Works with any hard disk that has INT 13h (BIOS) support - XT/AT/IDE/MFM/RLL/SCSI/ESDI/etc.

PCI

This utility is designed to assist monitor repairers generate various resolutions easily, as well as to display several screens helpful for alignment purposes. This program is used in-house by several monitor repairers, and is also useful for the end user to check your own monitor. Contains many screens other utilities don't, such as screens for checking colour balance, colour bleed, static and dynamic convergence, overscan, horizontal and vertical sync capture, and a unique burn-in mode for thorough testing of equipment. Works with any video card (including MDA/CGA/EGA/VGA), but requires a VESA compatible video BIOS to display SVGA resolutions.

TESTMEM

This is another attempt at a memory testing utility. This one varies from the one built into PC Diagnostics '95 (which has a few problems on some computers), in that it is optimized for and only runs on 486 or higher CPU's. It can handle as much RAM as you have - up to 4Gb, and does not require support from the PC's BIOS, so all the limitations of the memory tester in Diags are avoided. It is hoped that one day this code will be merged with that of Diags, to create the best memory tester possible. For now, this code is still under testing and is thus presented as a separate program. Please send your comments on how this program performs for you - both good and bad.
